Plovdiv central square is distinguished by historical and architectural layers. Although the intersection of some of these is quite specific and unique the square remains a place with vague programmatic content, amorphous form and tangled traffic infrastructure versus public spaces.
It is important that the various fragments from different historical periods are integrated into one assembly that will give the character of the central square of Plovdiv. The element used to create the composition, the covered collonade has in itself a certain historical reference, however, it is interpreted in a contemporary way with the main goal to create shades of space from public to private. The proposal for the concept of expanded forum agglomeration presents a comprehensive approach to planing the Plovdiv central square as a whole.
The 6 new tangents-colonnades are inserted inside of the existing urban tissue. Each of these has a specific character designed by its context. And at the same time defines a new spatial/programmatic/functional zone. They present the following spatial qualities :
Integration of different time layers
Defining the square as one
Defining new spatial elements with a different program
The colonnades create a series of new scenarios : entrance, filter, pedestrian path, gathering place, passage, underpass, roof garden, new space creators and new space connectors.
With this project, we offer a strategy for creating a comprehensive frame while building reflections between different time and city layers.
